The default behavior of split is to generate output files of a fixed size, default 1000 lines. The files are named by appending aa, ab, ac, etc. to output filename.

Jul 11, 2006 . tar cvf file.tar /dir/to/tar split -b 100000000 file.tar split-file. This will create split-file. aa, split-file.ab etc and you can recreate the original tar file .
